drabble: six drabbles meme
From littleadder and 9282828 other people who have posted this today:

The first six people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble/ficlet of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

Because we all know I'm a cookleta hoarder, I'll make this harder and say I'll only do one drabble per pairing. So if somebody says cookleta, the next person needs to say kradam. Or something. HIT ME. Also, prompts would be lovely, but aren't necessary.

Sirius Black was one of those students who never really listened to, well, other students. He would, of course, listen to his best friend, James Potter, and occasionally even Remus, whom she has no doubt he has had a crush on since first year and they were sorted into the same house. She remembers the day they were all sorted, because even though she knew every house had good (and bad) qualities, she was nervous and maybe even a little scared of putting that weary old hat on, and letting it decide what her next seven years of school were going to be like. Sirius was the second person to be sorted, after Josh Abel. Everyone knew he was going to be in Slytherin. Every member of the Black family was in Slytherin: the House for snakes, for those who were cunning and ambitious, to those willing to do anything to achieve their goals.

She'd only been eleven and she knew that Sirius performed the impossible by being sorted into Gryffindor instead. Honestly, it had calmed her down a little. No matter where she was sorted, she couldn't possibly let her family down that much. The hat slid down over her eyes, blocking the faces of the girls she'd made friends with on the train; from Prianka and Kristie and Kayla. She breathed and thought please just let it be somewhere good for me.

"RAVENCLAW!!" the hat had yelled, and she'd let out a horribly long, almost painful breath. Ravenclaw, for those of wit and learning. Ravenclaw. She could do Ravenclaw, with their blue and silver Eagles. Prianka and Kayla followed her into her new house, but Kristie and Bobbie became Hufflepuff's, and shuffled to a different table. A table for each of the houses, lined up and down the Great Hall, the ceiling magicked into looking like the night sky.

She remembers looking up at it in awe. Her parents were magical, of course, but Hogwarts was something amazing even for her. She couldn't even imagine what the muggle-born's must be feeling, looking up at it: Kristie and Kayla, for instance, looked to be trying to find muggle-known constellations; constellations, which, of course, were nowhere to be found on Hogwarts' ceiling.

"Jay," Pri had said, shaking her arm. "Professor Dumbledore's starting his speech!"

She had turned to listen, but caught the eye of a boy who'd sat down at the green and silver table to her right. He had somewhat long hair for a boy, dark and looking like it hadn't been washed. His nose was a bit crooked too, but his eyes were--pretty.

It was the first time she'd seen Severus Snape.

Severus Snape, a Slytherin who seemed to view her friends with something like disdain, except when nobody was around to see; a Slytherin who thought a good way to impress her would be to turn Sirius Black's hair green during their first potions lesson, who'd been the favorite target of Sirius' and James' pranks ever since.

It wasn't hard, exactly, to figure out why Remus disappeared once a month. Nobody was sick that often, that uniform. It helped a little, when Kristie dated Sirius for a few months during third year and they were around the Gryffindor boys so much. She and Prianka traded looks, and Kayla asked them, a few weeks after Sirius broke up with Kristie, if they'd noticed the same things she had.

The monthly illness; the bruises and scratches and constant weariness, the worried looks the other boys always had on their faces, mouths set in grim lines. That every time Remus got sick, there was a full moon in the sky, and the Shrieking Shack screamed.

It wasn't hard to figure out, really, so long as you were looking.

Severus had started looking.

They had never talked much--Slytherin's typically had little time for students from other houses, and Severus seemed to have little time for anyone at all. But she still secretly thought he was a bit, well, pretty. If he didn't look so sad, or so angry, all the time, she thought he really could be.

She sat next to him the library once, in their fifth year. He looked up, eyes widening for a moment as he realized who she was. She said, "Hey, Severus," and pulled open her muggle book, the one called Persian Boy, and started to read. They sat there for hours, and somehow, started talking. Just about little things, mostly, potions ingredients and charms spells they'd like to learn.

She still doesn't quite remember how they got onto the topic of werewolves, but she felt nervous when she realized what they were talking about. Werewolf, from the Anglo-Saxon word were. He seemed a bit upset at the lack of information on that particular magical creature. He sighed and rubbed at his nose irritatingly. She wondered what he'd say if he knew more, if he--her thirst for information, for conversation and debate and different views was too much of a temptation, and she pushed over the book she'd had in her bag.

She'd realized her mistake long after he walked her to her Tower, and touched her wrist, and she leaned down to kiss him, pushing her mouth against his harshly, their teeth cracking against one-another's. They had laughed awkwardly, and tried again, and ended up kissing against the stairs until a prefect showed up and sent them to their separate common rooms.

I'll prove it, Severus had whispered against her neck, and then you'll only want me.

She had been distracted enough not to wonder what that meant until later on, until she was wet from a shower and climbing into her four-poster bed, and noticed the very bright, very yellow, very full moon visible through the window. She shook Pri and Kayla awake, and barely put on her robes before they ran out of the room and down the hall, completely unminding to the cat, Mrs. Norris, chasing after them down the hallway, Mr. Filch, the caretaker, probably right on her heels, yelling about students being out of bed.

Sirius was a good guy, really, he just--never thought. Never listened. It was a trait Severus shared, and Jay prayed she wasn't too late. The Whomping Willow shook as James ran to it, and Jay hung back even as he and Sirius both ran inside a small hole near the knot in its trunk. The branches slammed down on the ground as soon as she took a step forward. The small, terrifying noises that the Shrieking Shack was known for echoed out from that hole, and it seemed to take hours before Sirius and James dragged Severus back out, his shirt ripped and his hair messy, covered in dirt and bits of wood and rock.

"Severus," she had whispered, and Prianka said something short--"Jay,"--before she turned and stalked back to Hogwarts, ready to see Filch and accept her punishment for being out of bed so late.

Remus apologized the next day, even though he didn't remember any of it. He was more scratched up than she had ever seen him before, even after a full moon. Sirius sat by the end of his bed in the hospital wing, his head hung down between his knees. Remus was refusing to talk to him, but couldn't quite banish him from the room.

Jay hadn't spoken to Severus yet. He was selfish, she thought. Immature, prideful, stupid.

She sat with Remus for an hour, before she finally went to the Great Hall for lunch and grabbed a pumpkin pasty from beside Bobbie, sliding down in-between her and Kristie at the Hufflepuff table. "We have bad taste in guys," Kristie said, nibbling on a cookie. Bobbie laughed, and Prianka put her head down on the table, before they all started to laugh. The Bloody Baron floated above them, and gave them a look full of disapproval, which just made them laugh harder.

Jay breathes deeply, and presses the heels of her palms to her eyes until the pressure promises she won't start to cry. Severus is sitting at the Slytherin table, towards the end. He's by himself, picking at his plate depressingly. She closes her eyes and gets up, walking over slowly.

"Severus?" she says, quietly, and hesitantly sits down across from him.

"Jay," he says back, not quite looking into her eyes.

"Just--promise me you'll never be that stupid again."

He looks at her, and she's again struck with how pretty his eyes are.

"Alright."
